What should I do if I lose my residence card?

Updated: Feb 8, 2022

Follow the procedures given below.

  • First of all, please look for it.

  • Go to a place you may have forgotten and look for it.

  • Think about the place where you might have put or left it.

  • If you have confirmed that you really lost it, go to the police.

  • Please go to the police box near your house or the police box near the place you may have lost and consult about your lost item.

  • Please inform your mobile phone number to the police or the number you can be connected while calling you.

  • After that, you will get a copy of the application form or receipt to search for a residence card from the police.

  • If you go to the same police box a few days later after giving an application, you will be able to find out the newest information about the lost item.

  • if you give your mobile phone number to the police, they will call you when they find your lost item. In Japan, police generally take 7 days to search for lost items. If the police can't find it within 7 days, the police prove your lost item and give you the ‘lost report.’

  • Then, the police will provide a "loss report". This is received not from the police box, but from the police station.

  • When you go to the police station, bring a small piece of paper that you got from the police.

Remarks:

No matter what you lose, you will need to get a loss report from the police before giving

an application for re-issuance.
